Professional drag car racer Shawn Cowie was critically injured in a motorcycle accident on Saturday night. Both Cowie and a female motorist who hit him were hospitalized for their personal injuries. Police officers smelled alcohol on the driver's breath and a blood sample was taken for analysis.
Motorcycle accidents involving trucks and cars usually result in severe personal injuries and even death. These life-changing accidents are sometimes caused when car drivers fail to pay attention to motorcyclists on the road or attempt to pass motorcyclists in an unsafe manner.
Drunk driving is another common cause of accidents between cars and motorcycles. Drunk motorists are more likely to be distracted and less likely to respond appropriately to motorcyclists on the road.
Saturday's accident happened at approximately 10:30 p.m. on I-40, near mile marker 207, according to Metro Police. Officers believe that a 20-year-old female driver hit the drag racer's motorcycle and sent him flying off of the interstate.
"To get a better grasp of it, he was struck by a vehicle with enough force not just to throw him off the interstate but underneath the interstate," a police captain said. "It was probably a 30 foot fall."
The 29-year-old professional drag car racer was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition. Although the racer's injuries are life threatening, his condition has improved.
The 20-year-old driver of the car was also ejected from her vehicle and rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Police officers believe that she was driving while drunk and that her door opened on impact, WTVF-TV reports.
