In a match between a car and pedestrian, the car will always win

A large percentage of accidents that occur on the roadway each day involve two vehicles, and a significant portion of those are considered only minor accidents. Vehicles that weigh several thousand pounds act as a protective barrier for their passengers when involved in smaller collisions, but those small collisions can quickly turn fatal when one of the parties involved is a pedestrian.

A longtime Tennessee lost his life late one night this week when he was walking along the roadway and was involved in a vehicle accident. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the 75-year-old pedestrian was struck at approximately 9:23 just as the daylight began to disappear.

The police sergeant who responded to the scene reported that a 1995 Honda was heading west down the street on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 when the vehicle struck the pedestrian. The driver of the vehicle was wearing his seatbelt and was protected by the mass of metal surrounding him and walked away from the incident uninjured.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol waited until early Thursday morning before releasing the name of the victim. Officials were unable to locate the elderly victim's family but reported that they would continue in their efforts until they could successfully contact a relative.

The police have not released any information about the events leading up to the crash or whether alcohol or drugs were involved in causing the accident. While it is unclear whether criminal charges will be filed, the driver of the Honda could possibly be held liable for civil damages if found negligent in a lawsuit that could be filed by the family once they are located.
