Nationwide crackdown on drunk drivers begins

In our last post we discussed the tragic drunk driving car accident which claimed the life of a 3-year-old Nashville boy. Although the drunk driver was sentenced to 12 years in prison, the boy's family is still outraged and shaken by the accident.

Drunk driving accidents are a problem throughout the year in Nashville. Although a drunk driving accident can happen on any day of the year, area roads are notoriously dangerous during summertime because high numbers of Nashville residents decide to drive while intoxicated during summer holidays such as Labor Day.

In response to the perceived increase in DUI accidents during the summer months, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration sponsors national campaigns aimed to curb the number of intoxicated Tennesseans on area roads.

Using taglines such as "Drive sober or get pulled over," "Cops are cracking down," and "Over the limit, under arrest," the NHTSA campaign seeks to increase awareness of the national drunk driving problem and encourages individuals to find designated drivers before they decide to go out and drink.

Participating law enforcement agencies will increase their DUI enforcement efforts during the duration of the crackdown period. DUI enforcement can include saturation patrols, drunk driving checkpoints, and ignition-lock devices which test a convicted DUI offender's sobriety before they can start a car.

Drunk driving is most common among males ages 21 to 34 years old and nearly 9,000 people between ages 21 and 34 were killed in car accidents in 2009. About half of these car accidents were drunk driving car accidents.

The national crackdown began yesterday and will continue through Labor Day Weekend.
