Halloween may be a dangerous night for Nashville pedestrians

It's trick-or-treat time in Nashville. While many parents are concerned about whether their children will gorge themselves on candy, the most dangerous part of the holiday is not a sugar high. The AAA says that Halloween is the deadliest day of the year for pedestrian accidents and that parents should be vigilant about their children's safety.

Pedestrian accidents are typically very serious and result in catastrophic injuries or death. Fatal pedestrian accidents are more likely on Halloween because of the increased numbers of children roaming neighborhoods on Halloween night. Children are less likely to survive being hit by a car and more likely to be involved a pedestrian accident when parents fail to stress pedestrian safety.

Nashville motorists can help prevent Halloween pedestrian accidents by taking the following steps:

  • Avoid distracted driving. Do not text while driving and remain on the lookout for trick-or-treaters.
  • Drive sober. Intoxicated drivers are more likely to hit pedestrians than sober drivers. Designate a sober driver before you go out or plan on taking a taxi. Other safety options include attending parties within walking distance or asking a house party host if you can spend the night.
  • Avoid neighborhood shortcuts. Trick-or-treaters are most likely to dart onto residential streets.

Parents can help their children remain safe by taking the following actions:

  • Escort younger trick-or-treaters and insist that older children travel in groups.
  • Teach children to cross only at cross walks and to look both ways before walking onto the street.
  • Dress children in bright costumes which are more easily visible by motorists.
