Excessive speed and road design contribute to fatal accident

Throughout the state of Tennessee, there are stretches of roads and highways known as being dangerous. Hilly terrain and twists and turns in road design often contribute to car accidents as speeding or inattentive drivers lose control of their vehicles and crash into other cars.

A recent fatal car accident in which two individuals were killed has prompted residents within the region to call on local lawmakers to make changes to make the highway safer. The most recent accident occurred when s church van was struck head-on by an SUV that crossed the center line.

The 45-year-old driver of the van and a 16-year-old passenger were among those killed when the church van was struck and burst into flames. An additional eleven passengers involved in the crash were rescued and pulled from the fiery crash scene. Several of those passengers, along with the 21-year-old SUV driver, were transported to area hospitals with severe injuries.

This tragic accident was the most recent in a rash of serious accidents that occur along the stretch of dangerous highway. Local residents claim speed is a factor in many of the crashes as cars and trucks typically travel through the area at speeds in excess of 70 miles per hour. Drivers traveling at excessive speeds, coupled with the highway's curvy nature and lack of turn lanes make it especially dangerous for those traveling at night.

Every year, hundreds of Tennessee residents are injured in car accidents. Speeding, distracted driving and impaired driving remain leading causes for the majority of these traffic accidents.

Charges against the driver of the SUV that crashed into the church van are pending. It's currently unclear whether those involved in the accident will also file personal injury lawsuits or whether the families of those who were killed will file wrongful death claims.
