Alleged drunk driver in Memphis crash causes fatality

A 22-year-old man spotted two cars that had stopped in the right lane of Interstate 240 and made a quick turn to avoid hitting the vehicles. However, the car right behind him collided right into the stopped cars. According to police reports, the incident is being considered a drunk driving accident.

Tragically, the collision killed a 41-year-old mother of two from Memphis. The woman had stopped to help a stranded car by giving it a jump, according to the police.

The alleged drunk driver, a 25-year-old resident of Memphis, was taken into custody. The suspect is being charged with public intoxication, fleeing from the scene of the fatal accident, driving under the influence, failing to produce any proof of car insurance and public intoxication and open container. The accused is currently being held on a $200,000 bond.

Statistics released from the Department of Safety in Tennessee reveal that accident related fatalities have increased by approximately four percent compared to the same period in the previous year. Approximately 38 fatal accidents have occurred so far 2012.This number is than any than any other year since at least 2008.

Impaired driving can impact several aspects of the victim, or in this case, the surviving family members of the accident victim. For example, many times the deceased is the sole bread-winner for the family and a caring father or a mother. An accident caused by a drunk driver can deprive a family of its happiness. Many times accident victims suffer serious injuries leading to partial or permanent disability.

The family of a person fatally injured due to the negligence of another may be able to file a wrongful death claim. This could result in financial compensation for the surviving loved ones to help pay medical bills and funeral costs. Though a claim for monetary loss can be filed, no amount of compensation can fill the void left by the departed.
