A fatal head-on accident that occurred recently during the afternoon hours south of Shelbyville, Tennessee claimed three lives. Among the dead was a woman who was a prominent resident of Moore County, a relative of Jack Daniel, and former board member of a local bank as well as principal of a local company. The woman was a passenger in one of the cars. She was airlifted to a hospital in Nashville, where she succumbed to multiple injuries. Both drivers also died at the scene. The car accident occurred on Highway 82 about two miles south of Shelbyville.
A man who has been accused of a fatal accident in which killed a taxi cab driver in Murfreesboro has denied driving the car at the time of the accident. The apparent drunken-driving accident occurred on the Medical Center Parkway. The accused 25-year-old driver faces one charge of vehicular homicide and his third charge for DUI. After booking at a local jail, the suspect was released on bond for $59,500.
Multi-vehicle accidents are reported all over the U.S. and they too often have tragic consequences. Recently, a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 431 claimed the life of a Tennessee man. The truck accident, which involved three vehicles, occurred in the morning hours of December 7 on Highway 431 near Dunmor, Kentucky.
In 2012, Tennessee's roads have witnessed 933 fatalities so far and it is expected that the fatalities will surpass last year's number of 937. Law enforcement officers from the state have convened to caution drivers during the holiday season. There is heavy traffic on the highways during the holidays and drivers are advised to adhere to safety regulations. According to one estimate, one-third of the total number of fatalities is due to alcohol related accidents.
The students from Cookeville High School in Tennessee are spreading the word to not use smart phones and to promote seatbelt use while driving in order to be safe. The CHS TEST club, of which the students are members, was started in 2010. The students are making an effort to reduce the number of car accidents involving drivers between 15 to 24 years of age. Presently, Putnam County reportedly has the most accidents involving young drivers.
Two residents of Cadiz recently sustained serious injuries in a multi-vehicle accident involving two personal vehicles and a tractor-trailer. One of the injured parties was rushed to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries. His condition is critical but stable. The other person, who sustained life-threatening injuries, was taken to Nashville's Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The 50-year-old driver responsible for the semi-truck accident was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident and was not injured.
A motorcyclist was killed in Franklin, Tennessee in Williamson County; a southern suburb of Nashville. According to the police report, the victim's motorcycle was hit head-on. The victim, a resident of Lynchburg, was taken to Williamson Medical Center after the accident, where he was declared dead. The police suspect that this may be an alcohol-related accident.
Recent traffic study results may interest some Tennessee motorcyclists. The cost related to injuries and deaths due to motorcycle accidents in the U.S. was estimated at approximately $16 billion during 2010. However, the entire cost of motorcycle accidents is probably much higher given the medical expenses involved in long-term treatments, which are difficult to measure, according to a report released by the government.
