Tennessee interstate deaths on the rise compared with last year

In 2012, Tennessee's roads have witnessed 933 fatalities so far and it is expected that the fatalities will surpass last year's number of 937. Law enforcement officers from the state have convened to caution drivers during the holiday season. There is heavy traffic on the highways during the holidays and drivers are advised to adhere to safety regulations. According to one estimate, one-third of the total number of fatalities is due to alcohol related accidents.

A 29-year-old accident victim was remembered during a press conference recently. The young life was lost after a head-on collision with a drunk driver who was driving on the wrong side of the interstate.

Each and every family wants to spend holidays together. Every life lost is deeply missed by the surviving family and friends.

As part of the awareness campaign, authorities put up digital message boards on the highway to remind drivers to be extra cautious. The message boards also displayed the number of people killed on the roads in Tennessee. With each increased number on the board, one more grieving family is added to the list.

The Governor's Highway Safety Office director said that the awareness that is being created is having a positive effect on drivers. The law enforcement official had hoped that awareness would help in keeping the number of fatalities at less than 900; however, the current status shows that the number is expected to exceed last year's count.

Law enforcement has increased patrol efforts, keeping the upcoming holidays in view.

Other practices, such as driving after taking medications, are equally unsafe as they may also result in an accident that causes serious injuries or fatalities. It is important to think about the other people on the road while driving. For their own safety and the safety of others on the road, drivers are advised not to be negligent behind the wheel.
