Three-car auto accident reported in East Wilson

A recent midafternoon accident involving three cars on Highway 70 near Linwood Road in east Wilson sent at least two people to the hospital for treatment. A third person injured in the car accident was treated at the scene.

A Tennessee Highway Patrol officer reported that a 1992 Toyota driven by a 25-year-old man was traveling southbound on Highway 70. When he stopped in his lane to turn into a driveway, he was rear-ended by a second vehicle, a 2002 Dodge driven by a 70-year-old woman.

The officer said the elderly woman had previously swerved into oncoming traffic, making contact with a 2001 Chrysler driven by a 61-year-old man who was headed northbound, to avoid hitting the Toyota.

All three drivers were wearing their seat belts. The 25-year-old man refused transport to a hospital. Both the older man and the woman were injured. The woman was transported by Wilson County Emergency Management Agency to University Medical Center in Lebanon. The man was transported by WEMA to Summit Medical Center in Hermitage.

The patrol officer said the woman was cited for failure to exercise due care.

Tennessee laws provide that innocent accident victims can seek to recover monetary damages to cover repairs, medical expenses and lost wages that result from an accident caused by a negligent driver. The negligent driver's license can be revoked if he or she is found guilty of driving under the influence. Imprisonment and fines await the negligent driver found responsible for any fatalities.

A fatal accident often leaves a family devastated and facing financial difficulties, especially if the victim was the family's sole breadwinner. Even when an accident is not fatal, serious injuries can result in large medical bills and time lost from work. Although no amount of monetary compensation can make up injuries or the loss of a loved one, it can assist the victim and family in surviving after the difficult incident, as well as hold the responsible driver accountable for his or her actions.
