Tennessee ambulance crash spurs safety reminder

Drivers in Tennessee and the rest of the country have been hearing a lot recently about the dangers of texting while driving. But there is another kind of common driver distraction that leads to car accidents, and that is the distraction caused by another accident.

Recently in western Tennessee, an ambulance was responding to an emergency when it was involved in a crash that left it on its side. Afterward, police reminded drivers of the importance of getting out of the way of ambulances, police cars and fire trucks. When drivers see an emergency vehicle with flashing lights or hear its sirens coming their way, they should slow down and pull over, police said. All too many do not and this contributes to traffic accidents involving first responders and other drivers.

Many drivers get startled when they see flashing lights or hear sirens and may respond unsafely. Others unfortunately see the emergency workers are busy and try to take advantage of the situation by speeding or otherwise driving unsafely. Still others fail to get out of the way of emergency vehicles, leading to unsafe driving conditions for others. Emergency personnel are involved in many accidents, police said. They reminded drivers that they may be ticketed for obstructing emergency vehicles.

A driver who acts negligently and contributes to an accident may be held liable for injuries that resulted from that accident. Failing to yield to an emergency vehicle or speeding could be strong evidence of negligence.

Tennessee drivers who are injured can have huge medical expenses, lost wages and other losses. When these damages are the result of another driver's negligence, the injured deserve to be compensated.
