What's worse -- texting and driving or drunk drivers?

Many Nashville teenagers seem to text each other more often than they speak to each other. Unfortunately, many of them are so attached to their smart phones that they don't put them away while they are driving. In recent years, texting and driving has become a leading cause of car accidents.

And it gets worse. According to one new study, texting while driving is now the leading cause of death among teenagers. More teenagers die in car accidents caused by texting while driving than die in accidents caused by drunk driving, according to researchers with the Cohen Children's Medical Center. Their study found that every year 3,000 teenagers die in texting-and-driving accidents, while 2,700 die in drunk driving accidents. According to another study, drivers who are communicating via text while they're on the road are 23 times more likely than other drivers to get in an accident.

State and federal agencies, as well as safety advocates and private companies, have been trying to educate the public for years about the dangers, but many observers say even if Americans are hearing the message, they're not doing much about it. Texting while driving is still common.

Those who are injured in a car accident may be compensated for medical expenses, lost wages and other losses if their injuries were caused by another driver's negligence. Drivers are negligent when they fail to exercise the same level of care that a reasonable driver would under similar circumstances, and someone is injured as a result. Failure to follow traffic laws is solid evidence of negligence. So is driving while intoxicated or texting while driving.

Tennessee residents who have been injured in a car accident due to the negligence of another driver may want to investigate their legal options. A personal injury lawsuit can help compensate them for the enormous losses that come with traffic accidents.
