New bill could keep rental vehicles with recalls off the road

It's not uncommon for automakers to recall vehicles for defective parts. When this occurs it's important for a person to get the necessary repairs as soon as possible. However, there are times when the proper repairs are not made, which can lead to an accident and to someone in Nashville being injured by a car defect.

Several senators from both parties have created a bill that would stop rental car companies from renting a vehicle that has been recalled until the defective part or parts have been repaired. The Raechel and Jacqueline Houck Safe Rental Car Act of 2013 recently had its first hearing before the senate. The bill is named for the sisters who died when their rental car hit an 18-wheeler after catching fire. The car had been recalled for the issue, but the rental company had not had the defective part fixed.

If the bill does pass, then the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and law enforcement officials would have more jurisdictions over rental companies. For example, they would be allowed to monitor and review how auto defect recalls are being instituted by the rental companies, which could very likely mean the rental companies would be more inclined to comply with any recalls. Reportedly, rental companies would have 24 hours to withhold a vehicle that has been recalled.

There are thousands of rental cars on the road at any given time. It's important for a person driving a rental car to feel safe and to know that the vehicle he or she is using has been properly repaired of any defective parts. If a person has been injured in an accident because of an unsafe vehicle or defective auto product then he or she may want to speak with an attorney.
