Several hurt in four-car Nashville chain-reaction crash

At least four people were hurt recently in a multi-vehicle Nashville accident in which a large Hummer squashed a passenger car. Bystanders had to break the window of one car in order to free a woman trapped inside.

Witnesses said the accident was a chain reaction involving four vehicles, and started with the collision of two cars on Charlotte Avenue. A third car swerved to avoid hitting them but went into the path of the Hummer, according to a witness. The driver of the Hummer apparently swerved to avoid this third car, but ended up driving on top of one of the two cars that had been involved in the first collision.

Police closed the roadway while they investigated the accident.

When Tennessee drivers are injured in a car accident, the injured may be compensated for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and other damages if their injuries were the result of another driver's negligence. But in multi-vehicle, chain-reaction crashes, it isn't always easy to determine who was negligent -- or if anyone was. In some cases, the negligence of several people may have played a part in the accident. In others, one person's negligence made the chain reaction unavoidable.

The first step in any personal injury suit after a car accident is a thorough investigation of the circumstances behind the accident. A key piece of evidence in this is the police report of the accident. However, police reports aren't necessarily 100 percent accurate. Police are under pressure to reopen a roadway to traffic after an accident and so may not be able to devote as much time to the investigation as they would like. Police reports sometimes contain factual errors and they don't apportion blame the same way a court would in a personal injury claim.

It's important for Tennessee residents who have been injured in a car accident and wish to pursue a personal injury claim to begin gathering as much information as they can about the accident and the aftermath. Police reports, medical bills and other documents can be very important in court.
