Unsafe child car seats uncovered by federal agency

Nashville is home to many parents of small children, who purchase products for their families with the expectation that these items have been vetted and deemed safe enough for placement on the market. When there is a potential hazard associated with a product, these parents want to know as soon as possible. This is why recalls relating to an uncovered design and manufacturing defectare so important--they notify the public to possible safety issues, and help consumers make informed decisions.

In 2012, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration spot check on Combi child car seats determined that the products' straps were not strong enough to be in compliance with the agency's minimum safety standards. Meeting the NHTSA's established standards is mandatory for this manufacturer, and this test was conducted to ensure that these safety requirements were indeed being satisfied. As a result of the agency's tests, Combi was ordered to recall several lines of affected car seats, which had been manufactured between 2007 and 2012.

In response to the recall order, Combi petitioned to be excused, arguing that the failure of the straps in its child safety seats was inconsequential and did not warrant such action. The NHTSA rejected this petition.

This situation illustrates the importance of agencies like the NHTSA, which can help to keep dangerous products off the market. It is easy to see how products made by a potentially negligent manufacturer could result in tragedy; if even one of these seats had failed during a car accident, a child could have suffered a serious injury. If you or someone in your family has been injured as a result of a product’s design and manufacturing defects, you may benefit from speaking with an attorney.
