13 deaths caused by defective airbags in GM vehicles

When a recall is issued by a major American car manufacturer it can be very alarming for consumers, including those in Nashville. If the recall involves the potential for a serious injury or a wrongful death, it becomes even more imperative that the affected vehicles are quickly removed from use and repaired. For those who have been injured by a car defect like a defective airbag, civil litigation may be an option to consider. These types of lawsuits can help victims win compensation to cover medical expenses or disabilities caused by use of the defective vehicle.

According to a General Motors press release, 13 people have died in car accidents in which air bags failed to engage. The company is currently conducting a recall of 1.4 million cars that may contain defective ignition switches which can, under certain circumstances, disable air bags. The recall affects small car models that stretch back at least 10 years.

Originally, GM’s recall included approximately 600,000 vehicles; the number was later increased as the result of the company’s continued investigation into the matter. Prior to the recall’s expansion consumer advocates had been calling for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to look into the matter more closely.

For the families of people who died as the result of failed airbags, there are likely a number of emotional and financial problems to work through in the wake of the tragedies. Some may choose to resolve some of these issues by filing civil suits against the responsible party. This will not bring back their loved ones, but it can help them find emotional closure and gain appropriate compensation for the wrongful deaths. Those who would like to pursue such litigation may wish to speak with an attorney.
