Defective adult bed handles leads to 3 deaths

Like many cities, Nashville is home to a number of adult care facilities, assisted living complexes and nursing homes. These care centers often include 24-hour nursing services and utilize various types of medical equipment, such as special beds. When a disabled or elderly person is cared for with defective devices, the results can be deadly.

Three women--two elderly, one disabled--have died as a result of a product defect in their beds' handles. All were living in some sort of assisted living facility at the time of their deaths, and were using adult portable beds. Because their bed handles did not come with safety retention straps, they moved out of place, causing a gap to form between the handles and the mattress sides. This led to a fatal strangulation and entrapment hazard.

This article does not indicate whether any of these victims' families are pursuing litigation.

The handles were sold by Bed Handles Inc. and have been voluntarily recalled. The recall affects over 100,000 units that were sold between 1994 and 2007 in the United States. Assisted living facilities and consumers who own these products are being asked to stop using them and get in touch with the company to receive free retention straps.

If someone you love has died in a nursing home and you suspect it may have been the result of manufacturer negligence, it may be beneficial to discuss the matter with an attorney. This can help you determine whether you have a viable wrongful death claim.
