Motorcycle accident sends 2 to hospital for surgery

In Nashville, many people enjoy riding the open roads on their motorcycle. When they do so, they're trusting that other drivers -- many in vehicles that are much larger and with more protections -- will adhere to the rules of the road to avoid causing a motorcycle crash. It is the ideal that everyone will be safe on the road no matter what kind of vehicle they use, but that's not reality. Given the nature of a motorcycle, the riders are inordinately vulnerable to injury if there is a motorcycle accident.

A 38-year-old man and his 36-year-old wife were transported to the hospital via helicopter after a motorcycle collision with a car. The car, a 2005 Mercedes, was being driven by a 21-year-old man. According to the accident investigation, the driver of the car was making a left turn and committed a failure to yield to oncoming traffic. The motorcycle crashed into the car and injured the two riders. The couple required surgery and they remain in the hospital.

It's known that motorcyclists are at a greater risk of injury due to their vulnerability. That doesn't excuse other drivers from an accident they may have caused that injured the motorcyclist and any passengers. With a motorcycle collision, there's the possibility of a long hospital stay and even a fatality. If the rider was wearing a helmet, that of course will provide an extra layer of protection. But it won't necessarily shield people from injuries serious enough to put them in the hospital, lead to a massive amount of bills and prevent them from working. Insurance companies are focused on saving money and won't want to pay any more than they have to. If they offer a settlement early in the process, it's rarely enough to cover the injuries.

In this instance, the motorcycle rider and his wife were hurt when a Mercedes failed to yield as it was supposed to and there was an accident. They were hospitalized and have had surgery. With injuries in incidents like this, it's important that injured motorcyclists take steps to protect themselves and their future.
