What safety equipment is required for motorcycles in Tennessee?

Motorcycle accidents are all too common in Tennessee. While people enjoying riding motorcycles, these two wheeled vehicles provide very little protection. The best protection people can hope for, is that the drivers around them are paying attention to the roadway and looking for motorcycles. Unfortunately, this is not often the case. Many times, other drivers are not paying attention, are distracted or otherwise negligent. Therefore, motorcyclists are put at risk of motorcycle accidents.

In order to limit the risk of serious injury, the state of Tennessee requires that certain safety equipment be present on bikes within the state. According to the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, motorcycles must include several essential safety features.

First, motorcycles must include mufflers. These help to protect the environment and reduce noise. Second, motorcycles must include tail lights. These lights must include a red stop light and a red tail light. This light must be visible for at least 100 feet when the bike is braking.

Under these rules, rearview mirrors are also required. The bike should also include footrests for the driver and for the passenger. Additionally, motorcycles must be equipped with windshields. If the bike does not have a windshield then safety googles are required. Headlights are also essential, according to the department. These lights must be on when the bike is running. Finally, in certain situations, a bike helmet may be required. Helmets are mandatory for riders under 21-years-old. However, if the rider is over 21-years-old, then helmets are optional.

Even with these safety features, injuries are common on motorcycles. If you are injured in a motorcycle accident, you may not understand all your legal rights. While this post cannot provide legal advice, an attorney can help people following a motorcycle accident. You may have the right to compensation for your injuries if the accident was caused by another person's negligence.
