Auto collision injures police chief

Tennessee Highway Patrol report that the chief of the Lewisburg Police Department was injured in a two-car collision during the early morning hours of April 18. Officials do not suspect that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

According to the report, the accident occurred about 6 a.m. at the intersection of Ellington Bypass and East Commerce when a 68-year-old woman driving a Kia Sorento on East Commerce struck the back of the chief's Cadillac sedan as he was waiting at the intersection's red light. After the initial impact, the Cadillac was thrust onto the roadway's center and into a utility pole.

First responders to the scene took the chief to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was treated for major injuries to his spine. When the report was issued, he was still recovering in the hospital's intensive care unit. The woman was also injured in the collision and received treatment at Marshall Medical Center. She was reportedly released a short time later. Troopers say both victims were wearing seatbelts and that there was heavy fog at the time of the crash. The investigation into the cause of the accident was ongoing at the time of the news release.

In many cases, victims who have been involved in a serious auto accident incur a life-long handicap stemming from an amputation, a brain or back injury or internal organ injuries. While trying to gain normalcy, these people oftentimes face long periods of rehabilitation, ongoing therapy and, in some cases, long-term care. In the process, the victim may incur financial losses including hospital and medical expenses, wage losses as well as a loss of earning capacity. If the victim's losses resulted from the actions of a negligent driver, it may be possible for the victim to recover his or her accident-related damages by filing a personal injury lawsuit against the accused driver.
