Following simple tips can avoid wet weather driving accidents

Tennessee and many other parts of the country are in the middle of the annual rainy season. However, automobile travel cannot wait for summer weather. In order to avoid being involved in one of the 1.2 million motor vehicle crashes each year, there are some basic tips to follow when driving in the rain.

Even in clear weather conditions, a driver should maintain enough space between his or her vehicle and the vehicle in front. When the pavement is wet, this becomes even more important, and the two-second gap for dry driving doubles to four seconds between vehicles. A driver also needs to be sure that the vehicle's tires are in good condition and properly inflated. One important consideration in tire care is to avoid the potholes that the winter freezes and thaws create in the road.

Hydroplaning can be a scary and dangerous event. Hydroplaning often occurs when drivers cannot see that the pavement is wet or that water is standing on the road. If hydroplaning occurs, the driver should stay calm, continue to steer in the direction of intended travel and avoid slamming on the brakes, which can make the situation even worse.

If a driver or passenger is injured in a car accident due to rainy weather or any other cause, he should consult with his auto insurance company to determine what damages are covered by his policy. If another vehicle was involved, and the driver of the other vehicle was negligent in driving at speeds too fast for the weather and road conditions, the accident victim may be entitled to receive compensation for vehicle repair, medical expenses, pain and suffering and lost income. If the responsible driver is uninsured or has an insurance carrier that is trying to avoid payment, the victim may want to seek the services of an attorney who may be able to negotiate an appropriate settlement with the insurer or, if necessary, file suit to recover damages.
