Voluntary recall of IKEA safety gates after children fall

When parents purchase a toy or child safety device, they expect the product to be entirely safe for their child to use. Unfortunately for many families in Nashville and other areas of the country, dangerous products intended for children still cause injuries and even tragic deaths. In many cases, a design defect was the cause of injuries to consumers. Other instances that caused accidents might have included misleading or missing instructions that led to a misuse of the product.

The manufacturer IKEA states that a specific line of child safety gates was not meant to be used at the top of stairways, but there have been numerous accidents that resulted in children falling down the stairs after their parents or caregivers installed the gates. As a result, IKEA has issued a voluntary recall for 75,000 of these gates that consumers purchased throughout the United States and Canada. Across the world, there were reportedly 18 incidents that resulted in the gate's pressure-mounted stoppers failing to hold the gate securely against the wall. As can be expected, this could be disastrous when the gate is installed at the top of a flight of stairs.

Reports also indicated a lower bar on the gates presenting a tripping hazard. IKEA is offering full refunds to those who purchased the gates, or the option of updated instructions and warning labels.

If the instructions included in a product are unclear, it can result in accidents even when consumers think they are using the product correctly. Those who have been harmed as the result of a faulty product or erroneous instructions may be able to obtain compensation for their injuries.
