Transvaginal mesh: A potentially dangerous medical device

While some people are familiar with transvaginal mesh, including what it's used for, others don't know the first thing about the medical device or its potential problems.

In short, this mesh is used to address a variety of pelvic disorders. For example, it's put in place to hold up the uterus or bladder that has dropped as the result of obesity, age or childbirth.

Despite the many benefits of transvaginal mesh, there's something you need to know: The Food and Drug Administration has made it clear that the use of transvaginal mesh may present a greater risk to the patient when compared to other treatment options.

According to the FDA, approximately 1,500 problems associated with transvaginal mesh were reported between the years of 2008 and 2010. Some of the most common issues associated with the device include erosion, pain, infection, organ perforation and urinary incontinence.

If a woman faces one or more of these complications, another surgery will be required for removal. Furthermore, it's possible that several surgeries will be required.

This is not to say that every woman with transvaginal mesh will face a variety of problems. However, the FDA wants medical professionals and patients to know that problems could exist.

If you had transvaginal mesh surgery and are experiencing side effects, you don't want to hesitate to visit a qualified medical professional. Along with this, it is time to learn more about your legal rights.

Our law firm is investigating cases associated with many types of transvaginal mesh, including devices manufactured by Johnson & Johnson and American Medical Systems among others. To learn more, please visit our webpage on defective medical devices.
