How to Avoid the Dangers of Recalled Products

Products are recalled ALL the time. It's amazing how many products we use every day that are deemed potentially unsafe. Last year, it was salmonella in peanut butter or listeria in our ice cream. How do you know if the products you're using are truly safe?

Resources for Finding Recalled Items

Companies rely on PR and media to get the news out about recalled items. Consumer Affairs is also a great resource to see recalled items. Consumer Affairs breaks down recalls month by month so you can see which products were recalled and when.

Additionally, you can sign up for email updates about recalled items on, and have news sent directly to your inbox. Staying up-to-date is important when it comes to product safety.

Most Recalls Are Labeled As Voluntary Recalls

Since most recalls are called "voluntary recalls," they don't sound very scary or important to pay attention to. However, this is due to laws that say the only mandatory recall is baby formula or food items. Just because it is labeled as voluntary doesn't mean you should not pay attention to the risk the product may cause.

What do you do if you think a product is unsafe?

Notify companies of potentially unsafe products. Companies are legally required to notify the government if someone reports their products as potentially unsafe. This means that if you have a product safety concern, it is better to be on the side of caution. Companies are also required to investigate claims of potentially unsafe products.

If you want to be even more cautious, notify the CPSC (the Consumer Product Safety Commission) of your concerns immediately.
