How to Stay Safe and Have Fun on Spring Break

Ah, spring break, the magical time of year where the cold of winter finally departs and we enjoy some much needed time in the sun. While spring break is one of the most fun times of the year, it can also be the most dangerous. We suggest you plan ahead a few things to make your vacation the best it can possibly be.

Spring Break Travel Tips

Traveling to the beach for spring break? Whether you're going to Myrtle Beach or the Florida Keys, follow these tips for a safe journey.

  1. Make your playlists before you embark.

Nothing is more potentially dangerous to driving than using your cell phone while behind the wheel. We're always a fan of jamming to our favorite songs, but make sure to stay hands free while doing so.

Pro Tip: Whoever is riding shotgun is the designated DJ. You might hear some cool new songs while on the way, and you will arrive alive.

  1. Switch it up!

Feeling tired? Switch up drivers! Even a thirty minute break from driving can help you recharge enough to remain focused while driving. Remember, distracted or drowsy driving is incredibly dangerous to not only you, but those around you.

  1. Be aware of the weather.

March showers bring April flowers, but thunderstorms on spring break is a bummer for a multitude of reasons. Most importantly it can throw a real wrench in your travel plans. March is notorious for having unpredictable weather nationwide due to the changing seasons. Make sure your car has good tires, reliable windshield wipers, and that your lights are all functioning correctly before braving the weather!

How to Stay Safe While Drinking

It's fun to let loose and get away from it all. Spring Break is the time of year where those fun summer drinks start appearing, and disappearing just as quickly. While enjoying your favorite drink follow these tips to stay safe!

  1. Use the buddy system!

Friends that drink together should stay together. On spring break, you're in an unfamiliar area surrounded by people you don't know. Make sure that you keep your friends close when keeping your drinks closer. Having one friend that stays (moderately) sober can help make the right decisions for the group as the party goes on.

  1. Don't Drive

Telling people not to drive drunk is the most obvious thing to say about staying safe while drinking, but people still do it. In 2014 alone, 9,967 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for nearly one-third (31%) of all traffic deaths.

Drunk? Buzzed? Don't drive. Ride sharing options such as Lyft are cheap enough to split amongst friends, and helps keep everyone (including you) safe.

Tools to Help You Stay Safe On Spring Break

These apps and resources at your disposal are all free and easy to use! Keep yourself and your belongings safe while on vacation!

  1. Family Map App

We know you're going to stay with your friends as the night goes on, but just in case you get separated ensure that everyone has the Family Map Application for their smartphones. Running in the background of your phone, it can help you find your friends the next day if you end up apart.

  1. Ridesharing Apps

If you download the Lyft or Uber application before heading out (or take one to where you're going to begin with) there is no excuse for driving drunk. Coupon codes are easy to come by, and as mentioned earlier, the average cost is that of one drink.

  1. Hotel resources

Most hotels have safes in the rooms. Keep your personal belongings safe even while you're out by stowing them away. Laptops, extra cash, and credit cards are best in your possession, not someone else's.

Be careful who you tell your room number to. Only close friends and family should have your room number to prevent theft and unwanted guests.
