What does car insurance NOT cover?

Car insurance can save you headaches and money when an accident happens. But, did you know there are certain things that car insurance doesn't cover?

That's right, most auto insurance policies will cover damage to your vehicle (and others), to property, and will even cover damage due to an earthquake in certain states! However, there may be holes in your coverage that can cost you money. For example, if you have an aftermarket stereo system in your car, a standard insurance policy won't cover the cost if your car gets stolen.

We've compiled a short list of scenarios where you may want to consider extra insurance or just think twice:

Your personal belongings in your car

Personal belongings in your car will not be covered if they are damaged in a wreck or lost because your car is stolen. Think again before leaving expensive golf clubs, a laptop, or any other valuable items in your car.

Business travel in your personal car

A personal auto insurance policy will not cover damage if you are traveling for work. For example, if your boss asks you to drive somewhere to pick up copies or food for the office, your personal policy won't cover any damage if you get into a wreck.

Your car loan if your vehicle is totaled

Car insurance will not cover the remaining balance on a car loan if you total your car. While the low payments may seem appealing when financing a car for six years, think about what could happen in a wreck if your car is totaled and you need to buy another car. The amount of cash you get from the insurance company might not be enough to cover what you owe, and you could be stuck with two payments instead of one!

People who live with you but aren't listed on your policy

Your car insurance will only cover those who live with you if they are listed on your policy. If your teenage son who lives with you drives your car and wrecks it, insurance will most likely not cover any of the damage. However, if your friend (who does NOT live with you) drives you home in your car and you get into an accident, insurance will cover it if you have the right policy. Be careful who you let drive your car, and be sure to check your policy to see what insurance will and won't cover in this scenario.

Custom parts and equipment

Have you been eyeing a custom stereo or rims for your car? Give it some thought before installing them. If you get into an accident, your insurance policy probably will not cover damage to these custom add-ons.

Car insurance is always a good idea. In the long run, it gives peace of mind and can save you money when an auto accident happens. But, you may want to think twice before adding custom rims to your truck or letting your teenager who isn't listed on your policy drive your car.

If you do get into an accident, don't hesitate to call a lawyer for a free consultation. We are on your side!
