Defective toys: These tips can help avoid trouble

As a parent, you know one thing to be true: Your children enjoy playing with toys. While there is nothing wrong with this, you also realize that not every toy is as safe as it should be.

For example, defective toys have a way of making their way to market. Despite the best efforts of manufacturers and government agencies, there is no guaranteed way to keep these out of the hands of consumers.

In addition to checking on recalls before buying any toy, there are some other things you should consider doing:

  • Don't give young children toys with choking hazards, such as small batteries or parts.
  • Keep in mind that old toys don't always meet today's safety standards. So, if you're buying something that has been on the market for a while, it may not meet the same standards as toys that were recently manufactured.
  • Seek out products that were tested by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). This will give you additional peace of mind, and that's something that you can always use when making a purchase.

These are just a few of the many steps you can take to help avoid the purchase of a defective toy. If you find that you have a defective toy in your home, take it from your child immediately. Even if they've been playing with it without incident, it's better to be safe than sorry.

In the event of an injury related to a defective toy, seek immediate medical treatment and then report the incident to the necessary government agencies. From there, you can also learn more about your legal rights, such as suing those responsible for the defective toy if your child suffered a life-altering injury.
